Community Canopy
the Program
In 2019, the City of Davis was awarded $514,116.83 to update its Urban Forest Management Plan and implement a community-wide education and tree planting program. The project was a true collaboration as the City served as the lead agency, and partnered with Tree Davis to carry out community tree plantings, educational outreach, and grant administration. Over the 2.75-year grant period, Tree Davis worked closely with volunteers and community members to plant 1,000 new shade trees within the city limits.

Climate-Ready Trees
What made this program especially groundbreaking was its focus on Climate-Ready tree species that had only been tested in the region before, but never widely planted. These trees were selected for their ability to withstand the increasing heat and drought conditions brought on by climate change. The program not only brought these resilient species into local landscapes in volume for the first time, it also educated the public about the benefits of diversifying our urban forest to ensure long-term canopy health.
Today, more than five years after the program’s launch, these trees are thriving, with a survival rate of 90%. This success reflects the effectiveness of Tree Davis’s hands-on education and five-year tree stewardship model, which ensured young trees received the care they needed to establish strong roots.
